‘The Get Down’ Canceled by Netflix After One Season

The Get Down‘s run has come to an end. Yesterday (May 24), it was announced the Netflix musical drama chronicling the lives of a group of Bronx, New York City teenagers and the development of hip-hop and disco was getting canceled after just one season.

The show, which had a first season that was broken down into two parts, was created and executive produced by Baz Luhrmann, and now carries the unfortunate distinction of being one of the rare Netflix programs to get canceled after being on for only a season. In a fairly recent interview with Vulture, Luhrmann claimed Sony and Netflix were committed to producing a second season of the show.

“To be honest, we have already developed the opening of the next season,” he said at the time. “Sony and Netflix have been very driven about having a second season. There has been no question about that. They really want it.”

In a Facebook post following The Get Down‘s cancellation, Luhrmann revealed it was actually his own lack of ability to dedicate time to a second season that led to the show’s demise. He is, after all, a movie director above all else.

“This exclusivity has understandably become a sticking point for Netflix and Sony, who have been tremendous partners and supporters of the show. It kills me that I can’t split myself into two and make myself available to both productions… But the simple truth is, I make movies,” he wrote in the post.
